Europcar operates in 140 countries covering Europe, Africa, North America, and Western Asia. It is a French car rental company that offers short-term vehicle rental. The company has a wide variety of recent models of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles for rental on daily, weekly or monthly basis. The holding company, Europcar Group S.A., has a head office located in the business park of Val Saint-Quentin at Voisins-le-Bretonneux , France. It was founded in 1949 in Paris by Raoul-Louis Mattei under the name of “The Automobile Subscription”. The “Europcars” brand was created in 1951. The company was then owned from 1970 to 1988 by Renault, the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits and Accor after 20 years of growth.
Europcar had progressively been acquired by the Volkswagen group from 1998 until it eventually became a subsidiary 100% in 1999. The group has been committed to the principles of the United Nations Global Compact since 2005 and to an ecological approach in 2007 by producing an environmental charter which was certified in June 2008 by the independent certification body Bureau Veritas. Europcar has been owned by one of the top listed investment companies in Europe, Eurazeo, since May 2006. The company is deployed over 130 countries and territories with a network of 3 632 point of sales on December 31, 2016.

Its network is made up of rental agencies operated directly by the company and rental agencies operated by agents and franchisees. These countries include France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, United Kingdom, Australia, Portugal, Belgium, Denmark, Spain and New Zealand.
